COVID-19 Outbreak Affecting US Population Badly

Not so long ago, people did not even know about the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, but in a matter of a few months, the deadly virus has created massive societal and economic distress and made the world upside down.

The coronavirus that initially came from Wuhan, China, has now been brought under control there. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the United States (US) in January 2020. Now, the US is the top country in having the most infected cases of the novel coronavirus. The cases have reached nearly 4.3 million with over 148,000 fatality cases in the US, according to data compiled by Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University (CRC-JHU).

By examining the current situation of the country, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said:

“If you look at the deaths as they’re occurring right now — about 1,000 per day — unless we get our arms around this and get it suppressed, we are going to have further suffering and further death. That’s the reason why, as I’ve often said many, many times, there are things that we can do right now in the absence of a vaccine that can turn us around.

The experts around the world are in a race to develop a vaccine that can beat the deadly virus but currently, there is no pharmaceutical drug that has been introduced yet to fight back with the coronavirus. But, there is still a hope that we are going to get the vaccine by the end of 2021 because 89 different research sites in the US have started a phase III trial of an investigational drug known as mRNA1273. The investigators will enroll around 30,000 healthy volunteers for the 3rd trial of the drug, says a recent paper published at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

It is still not confirmed when will the drug arrive in an amount the can provide throughout the world. Therefore, there is a need to follow the precautionary measure and standard operating procedure (SOP) that have been set by the medical health professional to save oneself on catching the deadly virus.

After Effects of Lifting the Lockdown

Lockdown due to a disease outbreak can be helpful in developing a policy for the wellbeing of the nation and to curb new cases given the inability of healthcare departments, hospitals, and other health systems to bear the disease burden. Therefore, reopening the states can be a dangerous decision by US governors.

Around 80% of the infected people from Mississippi have reported that before contracting the virus, they attend funerals and birthday parties where the people did not follow any social distancing or other safety measures.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coronavirus response coordinator at White House said: “Over the weekend some states are showing a concerning increase in positivity rates and new cases. Those states include Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia”.

After observing the rapidly increasing cases of COVID-19, Dr. Birx suggested that the rate of COVID-19 can be decreased if 100% of the people will start wearing masks.

Safety Recommendation Set by WHO

As the risk of getting infected with the virus is becoming easier and stronger than before, there is a need to take effective precautionary measures. The efforts followed by the US population have shown its effectiveness as the cases of COVID-19 have been slightly decreased in some states including Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has given out a plan to win a race against the novel coronavirus and end the global pandemic in multiple ways.

  • Frequently wash hands by using an alcohol-based product such as sanitizers or with a block of simple soap and water.
  • Cover mouth with an elbow while coughing and sneezing so the viral droplets do not reach the other person.
  • Social distancing measures are imperative right now to flatten the cure of the current coronavirus pandemic. Maintain at least one-meter distance from the suspected person.
  • Seek early medication in case of alarming symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing, and make sure to avoid social contact until you fully get recovered.
