Pop legend and multi-instrumentalist Prince, full name Prince Rogers Nelson, was found dead in his home. He was 57. Fans are still questioning his death and are looking for answers though there are unconfirmed reports that drugs might be involved. His body was found in an elevator. Paramedics performed CPR but couldn’t revive him. He was pronounced dead at 10:07am, less than 30 minutes after the Sheriff Department received a stress call. At 11:27am the sheriff’s department was investigating the circumstances of Prince’s death. There were no signs of foul play. Only days ago he performed one of his best concerts to date in Atlanta.
On April 15, Prince’s private jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Illinois and Prince had to be rushed to the emergency room, after it was found that the singer’s health had taken a turn for the worse. It was discovered that he was suffering from dehydration caused by influenza.
Prince reassured his loyal fans that there was nothing to worry about as he hosted a dance party on Saturday night at his complex in Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Only days later, the worst possible news of his death surfaced. At the moment no reason for his death is given, but the Sheriff’s Department has planned an autopsy.
It is no surprise that Prince’s sudden death shocked the whole world. Despite his enormous success he was a really down to earth person. Just days before his death, he was seen riding his bicycle near Paisley Park.
Fans who had attended his concert noted Prince’s ever exuberant and inspiring persona to be as youthful as ever. One fan did note, however, that he did seem a bit pale and thin than before, possibly showing signs of things to come. One fan noted that Prince was feeling vibrant and joyous as always, as he was seen riding bikes on Saturday morning with a companion near a strip mall. “I saw this person biking pretty quickly around the parking lot, but it wasn’t until he got close to my car and I made eye contact with him that I realized it was actually Prince,” she said. “I kind of second-guessed myself because he wasn’t wearing purple.”
The cause of death has not been officially announced yet but influenza might be the most possible reason, which begs for a question as to how come such a healthy individual who performs dozens of concerts each year is affected by a relatively common disease, and how come his physicians and doctors were not able to find out what he was suffering from.
According to data recorded by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 2014 till 2015, 61% of flu hospitalizations were among adults aged from 18 to 64 years. It might be due to influenza A virus strain slowly reappearing in northern parts of the world. This strain is responsible for majority of the deaths in young to middle aged adults. Prolonged exposure to influenza A virus results in the overaggressive response to the virus by the immune system, known as a Cytokine Storm. The immune system sends cytokines to the lungs, as a response to the virus. This results in excessive fluid buildup in the lungs, worsening the body’s condition. The excessive fluid buildup in lungs results in poor oxygen absorption and other organs get severely affected, as a result. The cytokines can persist for more than 17 days in patients suffering from flu.
So in cases where patients are suffering from flu for a period of more than two weeks, patients are at fatal risk. So it is highly likely that young healthy people like Prince can die from flu. It is suggested that people get their annual influenza shots to reduce the risk of early death.
It’s not been publicly announced whether Prince received his annual influenza shots or if he was treated at his private residence. Prince might be gone, but his legend will live in our hearts forever. In the immortal words of Prince:
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.”
