The practice of online body shaming is rapidly increasing — 2016 has seen an overwhelming rise in incidents of celebrity body shaming.

Recently, Modern Family star, 18-year old Ariel Winter received a slew of negative comments on her body after she posted a picture on Instagram showing her posing at her graduation ceremony in a mid-cutout, pink dress.

But was the backlash really necessary? Rumor is Ariel’s been putting on weight for an upcoming film starring the legendary Burt Reynolds. And even if she did put on weight there’s been a lot of hypocrisy regarding her size. After all, Kylie Jenner recently posted a photo of her wearing a grey version of the same ‘controversial’ outfit and didn’t have to deal with any negativity.

The practice signifies the hypocrisy inherent in the system where ‘plus-sized’ or curvy women are singled out for criticism far more than the average female.

Brace Yourselves, Winter Is Coming

Winter has previously responded firmly to her detractors, “Dear sorry body-shamers, I looked HOT in that dress. And if you hate it, don’t buy it. But please get a hobby. XOXO Ariel #EmbraceYourBody

Winter’s been very vocal about body shaming since undergoing breast reduction surgery in fall 2015. According to Glamour magazine, “The Internet bullies are awful. I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I am disgusting.”
